beauty in photography

Gert van Duinen, Romanogothic, 2008
To remind ourselves if the signifiance of grace in photography - of the importance of seeming to do the job easily - we need only to examine a copy of a mass-circulation photography magazine. Most of the pictures suggest embarrassing strain: odd angles, extreme lenses and eccentric darkroom techniques reveal a struggle to substitue shock and technology for sight. How many photographers of importance, after all, have relied on long telephoto lenses ? Instead their work is usually marked by an economy of means, an apparently everyday sort of relationship with their subject matter.

Le bon usage du téléobjectif
Dans son test du Pentax 200mm sur The Online Photographer, Carl Weese suggère une utilisation du téléobjectif différente du simple “voire de loin”:
However, there’s another use for long lenses, which is to photograph a perfectly ordinary, approachable, subject from an unusually distant position. This does some really interesting things to the look of a subject, and to the way it relates visually with foreground and/or background elements.
